Malacanang has affirmed that the GPH-MILF peace talks on the wealth-sharing annexes will proceed as scheduled tomorrow in Kuala Lumpur, despite the ongoing violence in Zamboanga as of early Monday morning. This also despite the venue which is the HQ of the third party, Malaysia, which has vested interests in this issue, in direct conflict with our own!
Chairman Nur Misuari and his spokesmen continue to deny instigating the violence yesterday, claiming that his followers were on their way to a 'peace-rally' and were harrassed by military while still in the channel.anil
The authorities have admitted that they had advance knowledge of the movement of the MNLF adherents (by the way, under the former peace agreement, they are allowed to go around armed, if protecting a VIP) but neither side will specify what was the cause for the eruption of violence.
This advance knowledge of 'imminent violence' must have also warranted the heroic speed at which an all star cast of the government’s top security officials were dispatched to Zamboanga City. President Benigno Aquino III sent Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, AFP Chief of Staff Emmanuel Bautista, PNP Deputy Director for Operations Felipe L. Rojas Jr., and Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II to Zamboanga City to oversee the government’s strategic response to the standoff. ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman and Zamboanga Representative Celso Lobregat joined the group. Mayor Isabelle Climaco-Lobregat met them at the airport.
This is a remarkably swift and strongly strategic team to deal with a few boatloads of so-called independence fighters. In the past debacle of the Sultanate in Lahad Datu, the administration sent only Gov. Hataman, informally, to meet with the Sultan here in Manila. When our settlers were being jet-fighter bombed in Sabah, the Sultan was instead threatened with conspiracy charges and arrest. And never did the President acknowledge them or the Sabah issue as an important piece of the peace puzzle in Bangsamoro, Mindanao and in the SEA region.
On Sept. 16, it will have been 50 years since the signing of the Manila Accord (picture left) and the acknowledgement of three heads of State, that the Philippines has a claim to Sabah. Our current administration ignores this.
On Sept. 10, they will begin the last round of the peace talks to determine the wealth-sharing agreement for the metallic resources and revenues of the Bangsamoro. The GPH will sign with the MILF, which as we have said time and again, and Nur Misuari and other non-Muslim groups echo - the MILF do not represent the greater majority of the people of Bangsamoro, they are merely a splinter group.
Our current administration ignores this. MILF/ Bangsamoro gets 75% of pie - that sounds close to the 70% cut of the pork barrel that crooked politicians get for not delivering anything to the real beneficiaries of our natural resources -the Filipino people!
It also makes me wonder if this is the same percentage that will be applied to oil or natural gas reserves that may be uncapped at the Liguasan Marsh. Technically, the marsh is ancestral domain of another group of peoples, it is on mainland Mindanao, but MILF, MNLF and Abu Sayyaf backers are brokering there too. And we hear the rustlings of troop movements.
Well, at the moment we get 0% of the oil revenues from Sabah, and come Sept. 16, we'll probably have signed away more of the wealth of Bangsamoro. Scarborough Shoal was roped off last year because we pulled out our ships, and the Chinese didn't budge from their positions. Spratly's might be shanghaied away from us, even as we speak, and though we've gone to court against China, we haven't shored up our defenses in those contested oil-rich areas. Our current administration ignores this.
Even while the fleece is being pulled over our eyes, I think the thinking class of the Global Filipinos is waking up,and suiting up and soon a different kind of rumbling will emerge from their ranks....the current administration better not ignore this!
